White Fillings

Fillings are used to protect affected teeth from the damaging effects of tooth decay, however, fillings are typically metallic in colour and are often noticeable when you open your mouth.

One option to improve the cosmetic look of your smile is to have your metal-coloured fillings replaced with tooth-coloured or ‘white’ fillings. Made from a composite material that sets hard, white fillings are a durable solution with long-lasting results.

If you do have decay and need a filling, then we recommend white fillings as a good solution that is both aesthetic and functional. If you already have traditional metal fillings, then you can replace silver fillings with white fillings.

What Are White Fillings?

White dental fillings are a safe procedure that entails one of our dentists removing any decay from your tooth, taking out the metal or amalgam filling and placing a tooth coloured filling instead.

The new filling is made from a very hard substance and will withstand the forces in your mouth when you bite and chew over a long period of time. This will allow you to smile without a metallic glint in sight, giving your teeth a more natural appearance overall. In addition, white fillings are identical to the tooth colour, making it virtually impossible to distinguish.

Silver Fillings Vs White Fillings

Silver fillings are an effective way of repairing a cavity. However, as they are made using a combination of metals, they can be seen very easily as they tend to stand out in the mouth. This means that when you laugh, smile, eat or talk, other people will notice your silver fillings.

In comparison, white fillings blend in with the colour of your teeth and are therefore unnoticeable. Also, as they attach to the tooth, patients can use white fillings to repair broken teeth, which isn’t an option with silver fillings. While silver fillings are traditionally used, white fillings are quickly becoming the preferred choice.

How Long Do White Fillings Last?

White fillings are incredibly strong and, on average, can last around eight years. They can last much longer, providing that you take good care of them.

You can prolong the life of your white fillings by brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, visiting your dentist for follow-ups and dental hygiene cleans, and not applying too much pressure (e.g. grinding your teeth or biting on hard objects).

How Much Do White Fillings Cost?

The white fillings cost is calculated per tooth. At Hermes London Dental Clinic, our price starts from just £120. For more information, you can visit our dental prices list page.

As dentists, we believe prevention is always better than cure and will always encourage and help you to look after your teeth, so you don’t develop tooth decay in the first place.
