What causes bad breath?
Bad breath, or halitosis, is a common problem; most people will experience temporary bad breath at some point in their life. It has many causes – eating strong-smelling foods including garlic, onions, and spicy dishes can all cause temporary halitosis, as can consuming a lot of coffee or alcohol.
Consuming such foods in moderation and brushing your teeth after every meal are excellent ways to combat these temporary breath issues.
Some medical conditions, including sinusitis, bronchitis, and diabetes, as well as infections of the throat, nose, or lungs, can all cause persistent bad breath. If your dentist suspects this could be the underlying cause of the problem, they will refer you to your GP.
The most common cause of persistent bad breath, however, is poor dental hygiene. If you do not brush and floss at least twice a day, and fail to regularly visit both the dentist and hygienist, particles of food can get trapped between your teeth, leading to a build-up of dental plaque bacteria that releases smelly gases.

Some people need to come in more regularly, and you should always follow the advice of your dentist.
