What constitutes a dental emergency?

There are several types of dental emergency, from accidents or injuries resulting in lost or broken teeth to dental abscesses, lost or broken crowns, bridges or dentures to severe toothache. In all such scenarios, it’s vital that you see a dentist as soon as you can.

Lost teeth

Teeth may be knocked out as a result of trips, falls or accidents, or from playing sports without a mouth guard. Losing a tooth is a traumatic experience, but with prompt action your dentist may be able to re-implant your tooth in its socket.

If you have lost a tooth and still have it, you should avoid handling the root (the bottom part of the tooth not normally visible). Pick the tooth up by the crown and ensure that it is clean. In some cases you may be able to re-implant the tooth in the socket yourself by biting down on a clean paper towel for between 15 and 20 minutes. Don’t force it, though. Bring your tooth, in a clean container filled with a little milk or your own saliva, into our Victoria dental practice. Alternatively, hold the tooth in your mouth between your cheek and tongue.

When you come into our Victoria dental clinic for an emergency appointment, your dentist will never leave you in pain. Further treatment may be required at a later stage.
